Whether you’re trying to holiday on a budget, or just love falling asleep under the stars, free camping spots are one of our favourite things about hitting the open road. The Gascoyne Murchison region is rich with rugged history and natural beauty, and it’s a 4WD dream come true! Time to pack up the car, swag or camper and head North on an epic adventure. Here are the best free camping spots in the Gascoyne Murchison region.
Peace George, Meekathara
Peace Gorge is a stunning spot to relax and take in the beauty of the surroundings whilst enjoying a picnic lunch. Explore the fascinating rock formation of the gorge and take a walk around the reserve to examine the wildflowers, native shrubs and vegetation. For the more ambitious, climb to the top of the rocks to take in the expansive view.
Jundoo Dam, Sandstone
The Jundoo Dam was completed in 1910 to provide water for the steam trains; the dam could hold three-and-a-half million gallons of water and cost £5,000 to build. Most of the original dam works still exist today. The area is home to Australian wildlife such as emus, bungarras and of course kangaroos.
Errabiddy Bluff, Murchison
Located just north of the Murchison Settlement, you’ll find the Bluff. There is plenty of room to set up camp on the flat cleared area within walking distance of the Bluff, but very little shade (perfect during winter!). There are no facilities and no marked path up the Bluff, but it couldn’t be more peaceful camped under the huge canopy of stars. In saying that, there is an amazing quirky BBQ installed by an ex-CEO's husband.
Ballinyoo Bridge, Murchison
Right on the banks of the Murchison River, this is a beautiful spot to camp. It has a picnic spot next to the main road with a picnic table and interpretive panels to explain the history of the bridge. Swim or kayak in the river and indulge in walks or birdwatching. In season you’ll also see some beautiful wildflowers here.
Although the Murchison Oasis Roadhouse does not offer free camping, we wanted to include it as theyoffer a great feed, supplies and facilities.
