Kalgoorlie is an amazing place to holiday with kids. There's so much to see and do, from mining attractions and tours to parks and even waterslides! Here are 7 of our favourite things to do with children in Kalgoorlie Boulder.
1. Hammond Park
This gorgeous little park is a lush green oasis in the middle of the outback. You’ll find wide open grassy spaces shaded by gumtrees and a playground. There is also a bird and animal collection, plus a variety of fish and birds using the pond area. Enjoy the walk through the park to the animal sanctuary, where you can get up close and personal to kangaroos, emus and peacocks.
2. Super Pit
This super-size attraction is impressive to adults, so imagine how it looks through the eyes of a child! You can’t visit Kalgoorlie without seeing Australia’s largest gold producing mine. You can either check it out from the viewing platform, or head on a tour to get down into the pit and really get a feel for just how big these vehicles are! The tour is suitable for kids over the age of 4.
The Karlkurla Bushland Park comprises of 200 hectares of natural regrowth bushland, along with over 2,000 trees and shrubs planted by community volunteers back in 2000. ‘Karlkurla’ (pronounced gull-gurl-la), is the local Aboriginal word for the Silky Pear, one of the many native bushes, trees and small plants that can now be enjoyed while strolling along the park’s 4km walking trail. These trails are perfect for a stroll, or even better, a bike or scooter ride as they’re well paved and pretty flat all the way round.
4. Tram tour
Kids love trams, so take this as a sign to hop on the Kalgoorlie Boulder Tram Tour! Sit back and relax as you zip around town seeing the many sights and attractions of this historic twin city. Tours are available from Monday to Friday at 10 am and 1 pm and there is a Saturday tour at 10 am. Tours depart from the Bus Stop on the side of the Kalgoorlie Boulder Visitor Centre (Kalgoorlie Town Hall) on Wilson Street. For more information and bookings, contact Kalgoorlie Boulder Visitor Centre on 08 9021 1966.
You’ll find this museum by looking for the iconic red headframe on the main street. Explore the largest display of the State’s collection of gold bars and nuggets, step back in time to see how prospectors searched for this precious metal, and learn about the life and hardships faced by mining families during the early 1900s. Kids will love the gold vault and climbing the headframe for some epic views.
No visit to Kalgoorlie Boulder is complete without a visit to Hannans North Tourist Mine, where you will experience a vibrant mix of gold rush history and modern day mining. During your visit you can climb onto a giant 793C haul truck, stand in the shovel of a 994F loader, listen to Paddy Hannan tell his tale of discovery, pan for gold and try your hand at the legendary game of “Two-Up”.
The Oasis is an incredible recreation centre in the heart of Kalgoorlie Boulder. It has a massive indoor pool and an outdoor splash playground for the little ones. The tweens and teens will love the waterslide and FlowRider too - who knew you could surf this far from the coast! It’s a great place to escape the heat on a hot day.
