4 Things you didn’t know about Mount Augustus

Mount Augustus may be overshadowed by Uluru, but if you ask us, it is far more impressive! Here are 4 things you didn’t know about Mount Augustus.

1. The aboriginal name for Mount Augustus is Burringurrah. The tale goes that Burringurrah was a boy who escaped the rigours of his tribal initiation, only to face the consequent wrath of his tribesmen who speared and clubbed him. The Wajarri people say the shape of Mount Augustus is the boy lying as he died on his belly... the rock formation on the west show his wounds.

2. You can hike to the summit! There are two trails you can take, a Class 4 and a Class 5. Both offer beautiful views and heaps of things to explore. The hike can take between 5 and 9 hours so be sure to pack plenty of water and snacks! There also also various walking trails around the park with 6 Class 3 trails and 3 additional Class 4 trails.

3. It is a bird watchers dream! There are over 100 species of birds that call Mount Augustus and the surrounding areas home along with an abundance of other wildlife like emus, red kangaroos, goannas and euros.

4. Mount Augustus is about 2.5xs the size of Uluru! Also considerably older – Uluru is 600 million years old while Mount Augustus is estimated to be around 1 billion years old!
